Drinking during pregnancy is dangerous because when the mother drinks, so does the child. During the gestation age of the baby, the liver is not fully developed. As the alcohol goes through the mother's blood stream, it passes through the blood stream of the child too. The infant's liver is too under developed to process the alcohol, therefore it causes harmful damage to the baby.

Drinking alcohol is the leading known preventable cause of developmental and physical birth defects in the United States.

Effects of FAS

An estimated 1 in every 750 infants are born with patterns of physical, developmental, and functional problems known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. As many as 40 thousand babies are born with FAS each year, far less than Fetal Alcohol Effects.
